Event Details

For 47 years folks in and around Sudbury have looked forward to Memorial Congregational Church’s (MCC) annual Messiah Sing.  The event has been an opportunity for singers and musicians to listen to and sing selections from Handel’s Messiah. Professional soloists and a community orchestra have offered powerful music and led the gathered crowd in choral pieces.  The pinnacle of the evening is when everyone joins in singing the Hallelujah chorus together.  It’s certainly a favorite holiday tradition for many in our community.

Like so many other events this year, MCC’s Messiah Sing needs to be adapted to keep everyone safe from the COVID19 pandemic.  Instead of crowding into the pews at the church, folks are invited to gather in the parking lot at Curtis Middle School (22 Pratts Mill Rd).  Music for the evening will be broadcast by FM transmitter for attendees to hear on their car radios.  This year will include fewer selections from Handel’s work but will add in other songs from various traditions.  Attendees will be able to sing along with the music in their cars (with windows closed to avoid virus transmission).  Rachel Williams, MCC’s Minister of Youth Music and Interim Minister of Music serves as Music Director for the event.

Handel’s Hallelujah remains a high point of the event and will be paired with a modern version from “Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration,” originally produced by Quincy Jones.   This year will also include Christmas caroling and familiar pieces from MCC’s Senior, Youth, and the community “Lift Every Voice Project” choirs.  Music will be accompanied by videos of the choirs and musicians performing virtually.

MCC’s Drive-In Caroling and Hallelujahs will be held on December 13 at 4:00pm.  A free will donation will be collected. Proceeds above operating costs will be donated to the New England Musicians Relief Fund.  Anyone who is unable to attend in person may request an internet link to view the concert video by contacting the church office.
