“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Christians begin the season of Lent on Ash Wednesday acknowledging that we are made of the stuff of the Earth, beautiful and good in God’s sight; but that we are mortals and one day shall die. Ashes are used as a mark of grief and repentance as we reflect on the ups and downs of human life.
The ashes used are created by burning palm leaves from the previous year and mixing them with olive oil.
