Church Handyperson/Sexton

Position Summary

Memorial Congregational Church (MCC) is seeking a responsible and dependable Sexton (Handyperson) to support the care of our church building and grounds, including the Old and New Parsonages. This part-time position focuses on repairs, maintenance, and preventive care.

The Sexton works approximately 10 hours per week (no weekends required) under the supervision of the Pastor and in collaboration with the Properties Ministry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general repairs and maintenance of MCC properties.

  • Complete preventive maintenance tasks.

  • Assist with cleaning activities as needed.

  • Respond to building emergencies and weather-related issues.

  • Identify and coordinate repairs requiring outside contractors.

  • Safely use hand tools, power tools, and cleaning supplies.

  • Work collaboratively with church staff and volunteers.

Qualifications

  • 1–3 years experience as a sexton, handyman, or in general building maintenance.

  • Basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting skills.

  • Ability to read and follow instructions and write short reports.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Dependable, energetic, self-starter, and willing to learn.

  • Able to climb ladders, lift/carry 35 lbs or more, and work indoors/outdoors in varying weather.

  • Reliable transportation required.

  • CORI background check required.

  • Hours: Approximately 10 hours per week (flexible schedule; no weekends)

  • Pay: $25.00 – $27.00 per hour
